We have found a unique chemical signature in urine that can diagnose adrenal cancer. Why is this important? Adrenal tumours are a common finding and detected in 5% of patients undergoing imaging for reasons other than adrenal disease. Most of these tumours are benign; however, 5% of those undergoing work-up are eventually diagnosed as malignant, a cancer known as adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). The overall prognosis of patients with ACC is sadly poor, but early detection makes curative surgery possible. Current diagnostic imaging tests can detect tumours with high precision, but cannot reliably determine whether an adrenal tumour is malignant or benign. This gap is overcome by our test.
